New York-based Muslims shopping on the eve of the holiday of Eid al-Fitr said that despite a Florida pastor's move to drop plans to burn the Quran, that and other controversies still left them feeling dismayed and vulnerable.

Hamed Hamed, a 52-year-old Egyptian-American who has lived in the U.S. for more than 30 years, said the controversy over the Quran burning had saddened him and his family.

"We came to America because we live a free life. This is what we love about this country, but now someone is always attacking Muslims. We are tired," said Mr. Hamed, who owns a shop called Fertile Crescent in Brooklyn.
