Court Keeps Gay Weddings on Hold

A federal appeals court kept same-sex weddings in California on hold until it hears the appeal of a lower-court ruling that found the state's Proposition 8 gay-marriage ban unconstitutional.

Three judges from the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals extended a stay to San Francisco District Judge Vaughn Walker's Aug. 4 ruling, which found that marriage is a protected right for same-sex couples. Judge Walker's ruling would have lifted the stay on gay marriages on Aug. 18.

The Ninth Circuit judges set an expedited schedule to hear the case. They also asked lawyers to address the complicated issue of which parties have legal standing to appeal the case.
